When I Get Where I’m Going

Jenny played me this Brad Paisley song last night, and though I am not really a fan of country music, I thought the song was pretty awesome. It was called “When I Get Where I’m Going,” and featured Dolly Parton singing backup, although that wasn’t why the song was awesome, or not the only reason (even people who don’t like country like Dolly Parton).

It was awesome because it made me think, which a great song will.

The singer talks about all the things he’ll do and all the people he’ll see when he gets to Heaven–and I’ve been thinking about what I’ll do, or want to do when I get there.

First, of course, is that I will want to see Jesus—not sure I’ll be able to look at Him right away, but to be in His presence…ah, that will really be something.

I think the first person I’ll want to see after Jesus is my Mom. I know she knows everything about me, but I’ll want to tell her about my wife, and my kids. And about how much she meant to me-I don’t think I did that enough while she was alive.

And I want to see Tim Wakefield, and tell him how much he affected my life, even though I only knew him a little while. He was such a great pastor.

I’d like to talk to Peter, too. I want to know what it was like to walk on water, and do ministry with Jesus. I want to tell him that his story meant the most to me, next to Jesus.

There are more, of course. So many. CS Lewis—what a great conversation that will be.

What about you? What will you do when you get where you’re going?
